The road roller of Malgudi

The road roller of Malgudi
Sits magnificently, painted blue,
With huge wheels as huge as the Maharaja’s elephant…

It rests under the tree,
Silent; satisfied and with no demands of its own…

With no work like my grandmother,
It sits on the porch watching passersby…

Rarely does it go for walk, unlike
The jewellery sets of Miss Sunita…

The road roller of Malgudi sleeps all day,
Staying Awake all night,
Ever vigilant is his best friend,
The village dog sprays him with love…

The mighty ruler of roads
The one and only one,
The road roller of Malgudi..
